OUR STORY

A Legacy Begins

Whittemore is founded in Massachusetts, beginning a legacy built on dependable supply, hands-on operations, and long-term customer relationships.

1919

Family Ownership,
Long-Term Vision

In 1973, Gus and Kathy Sheehy acquired Whittemore and relocated operations to Andover, Massachusetts, reinforcing a commitment to long-term stewardship and growth.

Subsequent moves, including the company’s relocation to Lawrence, MA in 1985, positioned Whittemore for scale and continuity. During this period, Jeffrey Sheehy Sr. joined the business, representing the second generation of family leadership.

Modernizing the Legacy

The third generation entered in the 2010s: Bridget Sheehy joined in 2014, followed by Jeffrey Sheehy Jr. in 2016, bringing valuable experience from consulting and real estate. Their involvement has helped drive a new era of strategic growth and modernization.

2010s

Leading the Way in Perlite

Whittemore makes a pivotal shift by expanding into mineral processing, operating one of the first perlite furnaces in the U.S.

Today, Whittemore proudly holds the distinction of being the longest continuously operating expander of Perlite in North America.

Expanding into Vermiculite Processing

Further expansion came in 1993 with the addition of vermiculite processing and a custom blending line, enabling the company to meet increasing demand for tailored materials in the industrial, construction, and horticultural markets.
